The Uprooted Charter

Helwing Villamizar
October 30, 2024

The concept of being "uprooted" profoundly shapes my practice, if not my whole being. As an artist who has lived in multiple countries, I draw upon diverse experiences and cultural influences. This sense of constant movement and displacement is intricately woven into my work, creating layered meanings and overlayed visual narratives. Echoing Arturo Herrera's perspective, I embrace the natural expression of mixed identity, capturing the essence of being a blend of North American, South American, and European influences.

Palimpsest Method

At the heart of my practice is the palimpsest method. This technique, characterized by the layering of symbols, meanings, colors, maps, shapes, and both figurative and abstract elements, mirrors the artist's journey. The process of overpainting and layering creates a surface that is simultaneously blurred and richly textured, inviting viewers to delve into the complexity of the artist's experiences.

Fusion of Styles

Having initially trained in classical figurative art before transitioning to abstract painting, I try to unseamlessly blends these styles. Figurative elements anchor specific memories and places, while abstract components convey emotions and the fluidity of identity. This fusion reflects the artist's personal and artistic evolution, showcasing technical versatility and a deep engagement with their subject matter. On a personal level unbeknownst to the espectator, my work resonates with the sentiment that being from a place like Venezuela naturally involves a mixture of influences, leading to a varied and cohesive artistic expression.

Map-like Quality

I incorporate a map-like quality into the paintings. The topography of the painting consists of layers of internal maps that symbolize the multiple places I have called home, highlighting the interconnectedness of past and present. This approach could add a rich narrative dimension, making the work deeply personal and visually compelling, but it is also a place where there is no longer a unified truth. This visual representation aligns with the idea of shifting from one cultural form to another, reflecting the interconnected nature of my identity as well as its fractured state.

The Artistic Process

The process begins with the palimpsest idea, embracing the notion of layering upon layering. Symbols, images, abstract shapes, theories, and colors are added and partially erased, creating a dynamic interplay of visibility and obscurity. This method reflects the artist's experiences of erasure and incorporation and the blurred lines between different identities and cultures. Moving to a new country and embracing new cultural elements, my process of cultural digestion seems to capture the fluidity of identity and the richness of cultural amalgamation.

Identity in the Age of AI

Exploring identity and language takes on new dimensions in our increasingly digital world. AI-generated selfies, for example, represent a shift in how we understand and express ourselves. This phenomenon raises profound philosophical questions about the relationship between our virtual and real selves. As digital personas become more sophisticated and realistic, the line between the virtual and the real blurs, impacting our self-image and how others perceive us.

This is the first time in history that a non-human entity will be given the keys to human language in a way indistinguishable from humans. In many ways, AI systems that can help us complete tasks in our work lives and personal lives will be extraordinarily helpful. But can an AI agent be a curator or fellow artist to discuss art? And if so, are the ideas shared authentic or synthetic?  This will be an evolving conversation as the system's capabilities change and our behaviors change.

I think about these concepts through my artistic practice by engaging with an AI agent as a curator to discuss my artwork. This interaction with AI highlights the themes of displacement and identity and underscores the evolving nature of human and AI relationships. By discussing the theoretical aspect of my work with an AI agent, I am playing with the sci-fi idea of foresight to see what could transpire and what directions society should take regarding AI and Human Relationships.

Of course, in reality, the question arises if this is even a real conversation, and not a tautological and masturbatory conceptual ruse I play on my self; the creator and the created playing on each other as copies of copies of an old forgotten world.

The future of human identity in an age of artificial intelligence involves grappling with issues of authenticity, agency, and the essence of humanity. Will our core sense of self remain stable, or will our identities become more fluid and constantly reimagined by AI? It is crucial to embrace the creative possibilities offered by AI while preserving a stable sense of self and human agency. Just as Villamizar's art reflects a blend of cultural influences and personal history, the challenge lies in harnessing AI for personal and creative growth while staying grounded in our fundamental humanity.

Conclusion

Through this intricate process, I will continue to create works that resonate with themes of displacement, identity, and the blending of cultural influences. The layered, map-like paintings invite viewers to explore the my multifaceted journey, discovering glimpses of different identities and stories embedded within one person, one data structure, living in the beginnings of that Sam Altman calls the Intelligence Age.

My practice, much like Herrera's, is a testament to the natural and dynamic expression of a mixed and ever-evolving identity. Villamizar's work reminds us of the importance of balancing technological innovation with a deep connection to our human essence as we stand at the threshold of a new creative world where human and artificial intelligence intersect.
